About Us

Sapan Foundation is an international association of Buddhist centres founded by monk Pema Samdup and his friends under the spiritual authority of Ngor Khangtsar Shabdrung Rinpoche. Sapan Foundation was established under the guidance of senior Monks and Nuns of Sakya monastery Spiti, who are dedicated to build a Nunnery and educating and supporting Nuns and Monks in Indian Himalaya region as well as others.

The Beginning

In 2006 Spiti Sakya monks and Nuns decided with their western friends to set up a non-profit organization. This trust received the name SAPAN FOUNDATION (for Spiti and Himalaya village Development). Especially we founded this trust for Nuns and dedicated it to the welfare of needy people. For a long time our Nuns have been facing problems to receive Buddhist education in Spiti. We don’t have a Sakyapa Sect Nunnery in Spiti. Sapan Foundation Project has become active in finding a long-term solution to problems such as secure housing, medical care and most importantly, education for Sakya Nuns. The Project has created a sponsorship program, reaching out to individuals around the world.

The Project is primarily funded by generous donations from individuals and organizations. Institutional funding has come from M.O.S.T. organization from Czech Republic and Nanja Terre De Via France and Sakya Spiti Project from the Netherlands. Money also derives from the monks and nuns' income-generating projects.
